I can get the background theme and lyrics to show in Preview and Live... I even see my background on the projector, but the lyrics do not show on the projector.
I have had the same experience, but think I have worked out what part of the problem might be with a little trial and error.
OpenLP Version: 1.9.6
OS: Win7 (64 Bit), on a Dell Inspiron M301Z
Display: Using a HDTV connected via HDMI (Widescreen)
The problem occurs when there is a verse that requires multiple slides, AND there is a tag that spans the pages. I have tested this by making a song called "Test", with lines consisting just of a number from 1 to 16 to make it two slides long; if there is {st} (bold) on the first slide, but the {/st} tag is on the second, the background is displayed but the lyrics are not.
Comments
Which version of OpenLP are you using? Have you read the documentation (for version 1.2) or the manual (for version 2.0)?
Check to make sure that you do not have Blank to Theme enabled.

Ah, we have a bug report filed for that already: https://bugs.launchpad.net/openlp/+bug/805088
