The main goals in lyrics projection are (according to me ):

readability
minimal distraction

To gain these goals I use plain black background and large white font. My current favourites are Ubuntu bold, Delicious Heavy, Fontin Sans Italic (just a pretty one).

If I use background images I make sure these make good contrast with text (either relatively dark background with white text or light background with black text). Using an outline helps a little, drop shadow on text is even better, but neither of these help on very contrast images.

Keep in mind, that when you project without screen, directly to wall, then black background is invisible, so with black background you have plain words (or border-less pictures).

As a bonus you get professional looking output for free.

What are your best practices?
