I would like an option in Settings to always have the file dialogue come up when the Save Service icon is clicked. I like to add a letter (a, b, c...) each time I save a service, so I can go back to an older version if I mess something up.

P.S. Instead of starting each week with an empty service file, I like to start with one that has all the standard slides in it, but no songs. Then I just have to add the songs and Save As... under a new filename.

Hmm, yes it does. I was focused on the Service Manager, where there is only an icon to save the current filename. It might be worth considering putting the Theme selector on a second line and adding a Save as... icon to the Service Manager.

When we created the current version of OpenLP, one of the things we wanted to do was declutter the interface as much as possible. Having lots of buttons just overwhelms new users and makes it harder to find the button you want. Therefore we tried to put only commonly used items on the interface (I actually think we still have room for improvement, but we had to make some compromises!)

I'm afraid saving the same file over and over with different names isn't something that occurs very often for most users. When it is required, the file->save-as menu suffices.

Also some widescreen laptop screens often don't have much vertical space, so we'd rather devote more space to the service items than to buttons.

Note I should add that I do something similar to you. I've just made the template files read-only via the filesystem to avoid me overwriting them by accident.

There is already a feature request to provide service templates, and this is the route I'd prefer to go down.
