Feature Request: How do I work on building in my own features?

I love the concept of this project. It is wonderfully functional. I would love to help the design aspect of OpenLP since it seems lacking in that area.

For example I would love to have two columns of verses on each slide. That seems like a very low priority request looking at all the other requests, but it also seems like something that I may be able to tackle myself.
